The Subterraneans
Digital Cover, Book Trailer & Website
Objective
Create a book trailer and new cover for Jack Kerouac’s book, The Subterraneans, to promote it as an ebook.

Background
Published in 1958, the book is synonymous with the time period it was created. Jack Kerouac was a beat author. His writing is said to be erratic like the jazz music of the era. Colored with the continuous drug use of Kerouac and the subterraneans, the plot focuses around Kerouac trying to find his place in society while being involved in a conflicting relationship with a negro woman.
Cover
For the title of the cover I used letters cut from vintage album covers to reflect Kerouac’s erratic writing style. To reveal the setting of the story, I used a hand-cut version of the Golden Gate Bridge to tie in the city of San Francisco.
Book Trailer
For the trailer I shot live footage referencing the themes and iconography of the book. Finally I recorded a narration in the style of Kerouac’s voice. To entice my digitally inclined audience, I gave them a visual representation of Kerouac's words. My audience includes new readers who would appreciate Kerouac’s themes but may have overlooked this book because it is older.
Website
For my website, I designed a digital interpretation of the Gingham pattern, one of the defining elements of “beat” style. The site features information about Kerouac, a blog to connect readers, and links to purchase Kerouac's other works.
